Counterbalance Valve Selection: Questions to Resolve First
In this article

A counterbalance valve can help control a load that tends to drive its actuator. Its selection is a motion-control decision involving stability, pressure and circuit interaction; it is not simply a choice of port size.

Describe the load through the stroke

Gravity, linkage geometry and friction can change the load-induced pressure during movement. Provide the full operating envelope, including the condition with the lowest and highest load. Include whether the load can reverse direction.

Compare pilot ratio and stability

A higher pilot ratio may reduce the pilot pressure required to open a valve, but that does not universally improve behavior. Stability, responsiveness and energy use must be evaluated together. Use the manufacturer's selection method for the specific valve and circuit.

Plan installation and validation

Location near the actuator can be important for the intended protective function, but the full circuit and mechanical design determine safety. Confirm return-pressure effects, free-flow direction and adjustment provisions. Commissioning should follow an approved test plan with a safely supported load.

Practical checklist

  • Supply load-versus-position information and actuator geometry.
  • Identify pilot source and expected return backpressure.
  • Ask for the recommended setting procedure and stability review.

Discuss your application

Explore related hydraulic products, or send JIUDING your model code and application details. Include the circuit drawing and the operating conditions relevant to the checks above so the required configuration can be reviewed.
