A proportional valve's response is not fully described by the endpoints of its command range. Small-signal behavior can determine whether a machine starts smoothly and returns to the same operating point.
Deadband affects the start of response
A command can change within a range before useful flow or pressure response begins. The observed result depends on the valve, electronics and load. Aggressively compensating for deadband can make initial movement abrupt if the complete system is not considered.
Hysteresis depends on command direction
The same command may produce different responses when approached from increasing and decreasing input. This differs from repeatability under the same approach and conditions. Datasheet values should be compared only when their definitions and test conditions are compatible.
Define a meaningful acceptance test
Specify supply conditions, fluid temperature, command ramps and measurement points. Closed-loop feedback can improve the controlled machine variable but introduces tuning and sensor requirements. Ask for performance relevant to the actual task, rather than treating a smaller isolated percentage as a complete system guarantee.
Practical checklist
- Define the smallest useful controlled movement or pressure change.
- Compare increasing and decreasing command sweeps.
- Record test conditions and whether feedback is included.
