A filter marked with a micron value and an oil report carrying a cleanliness code describe different things. Confusing them makes it difficult to judge whether the circuit is actually clean enough for its components.
A cleanliness report describes the fluid sample
Particle-count reporting characterizes contamination in the sampled oil. Results depend on where and how the sample is collected. A sample from a dirty drain container cannot be treated as equivalent to a controlled sample from the specified point.
A filter rating describes filtration performance
A nominal micron label alone does not describe removal efficiency. Review the filter's efficiency data, flow capacity, pressure-drop behavior, bypass arrangement and compatibility with the fluid. Installing a finer element can introduce excessive restriction if the rest of the design is ignored.
Set a target and verify it
Use the cleanliness requirement of the installed components and the machine specification, rather than adopting one universal target. Clean filling equipment, breathers, assembly practice and maintenance all influence results. Confirm performance with appropriately collected samples after changes.
Practical checklist
- Obtain the specified cleanliness target for the circuit.
- Record filter efficiency data and bypass condition.
- Use a repeatable sampling location and procedure.
